Colored Pencils, Markers, and Pens on Bristol Smooth Paper

Keeping his background in anatomy as the base for all of his works, artist Patrick Joven calls on his environment as inspiration for this San Antonio themed drawing. The city runs deep with history from both Mexico and Texas; therefore, it was fitting to use a well known Mexican tradition, the sugar skull face painting, as the focal point on the piece. Other well known Texas objects were put into place to to represent anatomical structures such as the cactus with spines to represent the human spine, the long horn skull to represent the sternum and clavicles (collar bones), or the blue bonnet and marigold flowers to represent the mammary glands.
